Dear Members,
It is my pleasure to invite you to the December 2020 Regular Meeting of
the Entomological Society of Washington! The meeting is open to the public
and will be held on Thursday Dec. 3rd, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. via zoom (please
view zoom link at the bottom). Our speaker will be Dr. Cesar Nufio,
Professional Research Associate, University of Colorado Museum of Natural
History. Dr. Nufio will be presenting a talk entitled,”Grasshoppers of the
southern Rocky Mountains: Understanding the impacts of climate change on
communities, species & populations over the last 50 years".
Presentation summary: From 1958 to1960, Gordon Alexander conducted
extensive weekly surveys of grasshopper communities along an elevational
gradient in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado. During these
surveys, Alexander kept extensive field notes on over 65,000 grasshoppers
that he and his team processed, noting their developmental stages, sex and
species. In addition to the scope of the survey, these historical
collecting sites were adjacent to weather stations. Fifty years later,
the Alexander survey, collection and associated data proved themselves to
be instrumental in helping us understand how changing climates influence
insect communities, species and populations.
This talk will introduce Gordon Alexander and his natural history
collection and the ecological importance of grasshoppers in the great
prairie states. This talk will also explore the utility of Alexander’s
field notebooks and specimens, coupled with a new resurvey program, an
extensive climate record and a series of experiments to helping us
understand the effects of climate change on insects found along gradients.
In brief, grasshopper communities are advancing their development
significantly and these phenological advancements can be tied directly to
accumulated heat energy, to the thermal biology of species, and to degrees
of local adaptations.
The Nominating Committee has selected the following nominees for elected
offices in ESW. Election of the nominees will occur at the December Annual
Meeting.
