Please join the Botanical Society of Washington for our first Zoom holiday
meeting next Tuesday, December 1st! The meeting room will open at 6:45
with the meeting starting at 7pm.

Our outgoing president, John Wiersema, will be speaking on the topic of
"An Analysis of the World’s Economic Plants".

Here are two versions of the announcement, one has active links the other
does not. (I am not sure that either will come through intact to certain
government accounts using some sort of safelink software.)

As was done at the last Zoom, there will be a waiting room to try to
eliminate the possibility of problem attendees. Here are the Zoom
details:

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86360527784pwd=czJ2KzF5bzdtaHZxcml0aEZnMTFpZz09
Meeting ID: 863 6052 7784
Passcode: 012021
(Phone: 301 715 8592)

This will serve as our annual holiday meeting, and unfortunately we cannot
enjoy the usual holiday potluck feast, as the meeting will be conducted
using Zoom. So to spruce things up, please attend wearing your favorite
thinking cap or hat and have at hand your favorite alcoholic or
non-alcoholic beverage to consume, as the talk will be interactive.
Consider also competing in our best ‘ugly’ holiday sweater competition by
donning your favorite holiday jersey. Pets are also welcome to attend.

If you would like to make brief remarks before the presentation, please
contact either Robin Everly EverlyR at si.edu or Kathy Bilton kathy at fred.net
beforehand. This can be some sort of show and tell or whatever you'd like.
We will begin the zoom session at 6:45 to socialize.

Dr. Wiersema retired in 2018 after 34 years of surveying economic
plants for the GRIN-Global database of the USDA’s National Plant
Germplasm System. He is currently a Research Associate in the
Botany Department of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural
History. This presentation will analyze the diversity of useful plants
and their uses over the entire world, with material for this analysis
being derived from the 329 families, 3,391 genera, and 14,482
species of economic plants characterized in GRIN-Global
(https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/search).
