Message-ID: A 4th spring field trip for Sunday, April 24 at 10 am has been added, this one to Ferry Hill, in Maryland across the Potomac from Shepherdstown, WV. (From Rockville, it's just over an hour away.) The circuit trail is about 1.5 miles and while not rugged there are a few hills through the woods towards the end of the trail. If one did not want to do the whole circuit, one could leave once the towpath section of the trail had finished. I've been thinking of suggesting this trip for years, and actually did offer it last year as well. So by popular demand (well, at least one person at any rate :-) ) it's back. The Shooting Stars have begun to bloom and I'm hoping they were not negatively affected by our heavy snow of yesterday. (Almost entirely gone now at about 11:00 a.m.) Lots of spring ephemerals should still be in evidence, including Mitella diphylla and eye-level Asarum canadense. Among the many things to see are the Atlantic White Cedars that Larry Morse wrote about in a 1983 article for Castanea: http://botsoc.org/Larry_Thuja_MD.pdf Another site could be visited later in the day if people were interested. Some possibilites: Snyder's Landing (4 miles), Snavely Trail (5 miles), Shannondale (30 minutes). Things to bring: lunch, water, binoculars, handlens, field guides, sunscreen, walking stick Please email me at (kathy at fred.net) to let me know you are planning to come and to find out the specific meeting spot. The trip will be limited to 15 people. http://botsoc.org/ferryhill.html ---------------------------------------- Next BSW meeting: Tuesday, May 3, 7PM (doors open at 6:45) - Carolina Siniscalchi, PhD will speak on the topic: An Overview of the Ironweed Tribe: Systematics, Morphology and Evolution of Tribe Vernonieae (Asteraceae Flier: http://botsoc.org/may22.pdf https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83345909061?pwd=aStVWjVtTWw1MXVEM052RllwZEVnZz09 ---------------------------------------- Tuesday, April 26 - 7:30pm MNPS Monthly Program: ?Stream Restorations?, The Inconvenient Truth https://mdflora.org/event-4664226 ---------------------------------------- Saturday-Sunday, May 21-22 - Back Alley Garden Tour And Tea (in Shepherdstown) https://backalleygarden.org/ ---------------------------------------- Pots of Gold: the World?s Most Expensive House Plants https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/apr/17/gold-leaves-meet-the-30000-pound-houseplants-sparking-a-new-green-crimewave
