Please contact her directly if you can and wish to assist her. ____________________________________________________________________________________ From: Ashley Rohde Sent: Friday, January 15, 2021 3:16 PM To: Wiersema, John Subject: Graduate student seeks information from conservation practitioners associated with the Botanical Society of Washington ? Ashley Rohde? Hello Dr. Wiersama, My name is Ashley Rohde and I am a graduate student at Utah State University. I'm reaching out to you to ask for your help in contacting other members of the Botanical Society of Washington. As part of my dissertation research, I am conducting a survey to determine how much conservation stakeholders trust and utilize results from molecular studies for conservation applications, as opposed to the results of more traditional abundance-based studies. ? Molecular techniques are being used increasingly commonly in these types of studies and are likely to continue to become more popular.? My research will help to inform the best ways to present the results from molecular studies within the context of conservation science. In particular, I am interested in the likelihood that practitioners with varying levels of molecular training will understand and use the results of molecular studies to inform conservation actions. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human research participants at Utah State University has reviewed and approved this study as protocol #9724.?? I am focusing my sampling efforts on researchers, land managers, and volunteer conservation practitioners who actively participate in conservation activities.? As the current president of the Botanical Society of Washington, you are in a unique position to really get the word out about my study. I am reaching out to you to ask for your help to encourage your organization to participate in this survey.? Please respond to this email at your earliest convenience.? I would be happy to answer any questions that you have about the project and to provide you with materials to send to members of your society.? Thank you!? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely,? I'm conducting a study as part of my dissertation research reaching out to researchers, land managers, and conservation volunteers who actively participate in conservation actions. I am contacting you and other members of native plant societies because you have direct experience working on and thinking about conservation issues. Specifically, I would like to know how the results of different types of scientific studies are put into action for conservation. I will compare how conservation practitioners use the results of molecular-based studies and abundance-based studies to inform conservation actions. This study is of particular interest to me because, as a scientist, I want to be confident that the limited resources available for conservation research are used as efficiently as possible. Molecular techniques are used by researchers more and more to answer questions about species of conservation concern, but their results may be difficult for practitioners without molecular training to interpret and implement. You do not need to have experience with molecular methods to take this survey! I hope to gather information about the perspectives of people with many different experiences. If you are interested in participating in the study (which I hope you are), please follow the link included in this email to complete a short survey. It should take about five minutes. Your answers are confidential, and you will not be asked to provide your name. Please only complete the survey one time. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human research participants at Utah State University has reviewed and approved this study as protocol #9724. Thank you very much for contributing to this study! Every response provides the perspective of a person with unique experiences and opinions; I am happy to be able to include yours. She began her career teaching nursery school, including many years at Green Acres School in Rockville, Maryland, where she taught with the progressive education values of learning through experience. In 1975, she initiated the much loved after-school and summer nature programs at the Audubon Naturalist Society at Woodend, eventually becoming the Director of Environmental Education. Cris? career interest later shifted to botany. She led numerous field trips and classes (now enthusiastically sharing her knowledge of the natural world with adults), establishing herself as an accomplished and respected botanist and field instructor.
