The meeting room will open at 6:45 with the meeting starting at 7pm. Our outgoing president, John Wiersema, will be speaking on the topic of "An Analysis of the World?s Economic Plants". Here are two versions of the announcement, one has active links the other does not. (I am not sure that either will come through intact to certain government accounts using some sort of safelink software.) http://botsoc.org/dec20.pdf (Links are not active) http://botsoc.org/dec20-links.pdf (Links are active) As was done at the last Zoom, there will be a waiting room to try to eliminate the possibility of problem attendees. Here are the Zoom details: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86360527784pwd=czJ2KzF5bzdtaHZxcml0aEZnMTFpZz09 Meeting ID: 863 6052 7784 Passcode: 012021 (Phone: 301 715 8592) This will serve as our annual holiday meeting, and unfortunately we cannot enjoy the usual holiday potluck feast, as the meeting will be conducted using Zoom. So to spruce things up, please attend wearing your favorite thinking cap or hat and have at hand your favorite alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage to consume, as the talk will be interactive. Consider also competing in our best ?ugly? holiday sweater competition by donning your favorite holiday jersey. Pets are also welcome to attend. If you would like to make brief remarks before the presentation, please contact either Robin Everly EverlyR at si.edu or Kathy Bilton kathy at fred.net beforehand. This can be some sort of show and tell or whatever you'd like. We will begin the zoom session at 6:45 to socialize. Dr. Wiersema retired in 2018 after 34 years of surveying economic plants for the GRIN-Global database of the USDA?s National Plant Germplasm System. He is currently a Research Associate in the Botany Department of the Smithsonian?s National Museum of Natural History. This presentation will analyze the diversity of useful plants and their uses over the entire world, with material for this analysis being derived from the 329 families, 3,391 genera, and 14,482 species of economic plants characterized in GRIN-Global (https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/search). * , _/^\_ < > * /.-.\ * * `/&\` * , at .*;@, /_o.I %_\ * * (`'--:o(_@; /`;--.,__ `') * ;@`o % O,*`'`&\ * (`'--)_@ ;o %'()\ * /`;--._`''--._O'@; /&*,()~o`;-.,_ `""`) * /`,@ ;+& () o*`;-';\ (`""--.,_0 +% @' &()\ /-.,_ ``''--....-'`) * * /@%;o`:;'--,.__ __.'\ ;*,&(); @ % &^;~`"`o;@(); * /(); o^~; & ().o@*&`;&%O\ jgs `"="==""==,,,.,="=="==="` __.----.(\-''#####---...___...-----._ '` \)_`"""""` .--' ') o( )_-\ `"""` ` From kathy at fred.net Mon Nov 30 09:59:06 2020 From: kathy at fred.net (KATHY BILTON) Date: Mon, 30 Nov 2020 10:59:06 -0500 (EST) Subject: [BSW] Entomological Society Zoom on Thursday, December 3 at 7pm Message-ID: This info about the upcoming ESW meeting was passed along by Jil. Dear Members, It is my pleasure to invite you to the December 2020 Regular Meeting of the Entomological Society of Washington! The meeting is open to the public and will be held on Thursday Dec. 3rd, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. via zoom (please view zoom link at the bottom). Our speaker will be Dr. Cesar Nufio, Professional Research Associate, University of Colorado Museum of Natural History. Dr. Nufio will be presenting a talk entitled,?Grasshoppers of the southern Rocky Mountains: Understanding the impacts of climate change on communities, species & populations over the last 50 years". Presentation summary: From 1958 to1960, Gordon Alexander conducted extensive weekly surveys of grasshopper communities along an elevational gradient in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado. During these surveys, Alexander kept extensive field notes on over 65,000 grasshoppers that he and his team processed, noting their developmental stages, sex and species. In addition to the scope of the survey, these historical collecting sites were adjacent to weather stations. Fifty years later, the Alexander survey, collection and associated data proved themselves to be instrumental in helping us understand how changing climates influence insect communities, species and populations. This talk will introduce Gordon Alexander and his natural history collection and the ecological importance of grasshoppers in the great prairie states. This talk will also explore the utility of Alexander?s field notebooks and specimens, coupled with a new resurvey program, an extensive climate record and a series of experiments to helping us understand the effects of climate change on insects found along gradients. In brief, grasshopper communities are advancing their development significantly and these phenological advancements can be tied directly to accumulated heat energy, to the thermal biology of species, and to degrees of local adaptations. The Nominating Committee has selected the following nominees for elected offices in ESW. Election of the nominees will occur at the December Annual Meeting. Tomorrow, December 1 at 7PM. The meeting room will open at 6:45PM for those who wish to come a bit early to socialize. Please write to Robin Everly (EverlyR at si.edu) if you would like to speak for a couple of minutes about a particular topic before John begins his presidential talk. John's talk, "An Analysis of the World?s Economic Plants", will include a number of questions for you to try to answer. So as soon as you are admitted to the room, please look for the participants icon at the bottom of the screen and click on it. That should bring up a box which you can then drag off to the side of your screen so it's not in the way. You should be able to find an option to "Raise Hand" somewhere in the box. (In the mobile app, you can raise your hand by tapping the "Raise Hand" option in the "More" tab.) This way, you'll be ready to answer questions during the talk. (And you'll be able to see the names of those in attendance.) Please attend wearing your favorite thinking cap or hat and have at hand your favorite alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverageto consume, as the talk will be interactive. Consider also competing in our best ?ugly? holiday sweater competition by donning your favorite holiday jersey. Not sure what the prize will be, but it's bound to be amazing!
