Subject: [vnps-pot] Meeting Nov 7 Re Environmental Threat to Huntley Meadows
     Park

Hello Fellow Native Plant Lovers -

As many of you know, Huntley Meadows Park is an environmental gem situated
amidst some of the densest development in Fairfax County. This special wetland
is recognized as one of the Virginia Native Plant Society's Registry Sites.
Today there is a debate about the deletion of proposed bike trails from Fairfax
County's Comprehensive Plan. These potential bike trails are designed for
commuters and would threaten the delicate ecological balance in the park.

Cathy Ledec, president of the Friends of Huntley Meadows Park, describes the
threat from the bike trails much better than I. Please read this article on the
website of the Friends group.

On Wednesday, November 7, please join Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay,
the Fairfax County Park Authority, and Fairfax County Transportation at Groveton

Meadows Park. They will discuss the Comprehensive Plan for trails and environmen
tal stewardship. The meeting kicks off at 7 p.m. If you'd like to view the plan

Unfortunately, State Senator Scott Surovell is a big proponent of the proposed
bike trails. Here's an article that includes his position.

Harry and I plan to attend the meeting, and we hope that many of you will, too.
Numbers count!  Please share this info with friends and support keeping this
park as wild as possible.
