We have lost so many of our greats over the past decade. I can remember as if it were still yesterday the fresh faced kid standing up in front of a botanical meeting touting this new tool called a computer to help with taxonomy. I can also still see another great, A. C. Smith (my Ph.D. Advisor) appalled by this "new" development. How things change. But one that that must not is remembering someone like Stan (and Al, etc.) for otherwise they cease to exist. So. Let even those among us with the biggest egos pause a moment, if they cannot come to the service, and remember him and the other great botanists who built their careers at the Smithsonian. I will pause at the Arboretum in Superior, Arizona. Sy S. H. One can either continue to the end of Rt. 67 to Boonsboro, then making a left and then another left onto Rt. 34 at the light in Boonsboro. OR, use your GPS to help you find your way using back roads into Sharpsburg. (Left on Trego, left on Mt. (Kim) (kas3a)" To: "maipc at lists.maipc.org" Subject: [MAIPC] Spotted Lanternfly in Virginia The following is from a facebook post by VSU College of Agriculture: ALERT: The spotted lanternfly Lycorma delicatula was detected in Frederick County, VA on January 10, 2018. Both numerous adults and egg mass were found. In addition, it was found at another site approximately 400 yards away. The owners of the site are cutting down and burning all Tree-of-Heaven on the site but it?s likely that it has spread from these sites. Since it is potentially a very serious pest of grapes, peaches, hops, and a variety of other crops it?s important to look for it and report any finds.
