I just received this from Dan's son David a short while ago. I wanted to let you know.
Dan really meant a lot to many peope around the world and had wide influence on many
botanical careers, including my career. He was a great man and important botanist.

Dear all,

I've just gotten word from mom that dad passed away early this morning. He had declined
rather rapidly recently, due to the dementia and associated issues, so it was not
unexpected, and in a way it was a blessing that he didn't linger any longer. Thankfully,
my siblings all came into town last weekend so we all had some time together with mom and
dad. Mom asked me to notify folks at the museum, and you are all people I know dad was
close with, and your addresses were handy, so I hope you will feel free to notify his
various colleagues and friends.

There are no plans for a service, although, per his stated wishes, his ashes will be
interred where his parents are buried in Shenandoah, Iowa at some point. I am not quite
sure what happens now, but I think I need to dig out the profile on him that WBFC put
together a while back, that was rather nice, as I recall.

Thanks,
Dave
