*Description: *By their very evolution, seeds offer an optimized conduit for
plant conservation: entire plants in miniature vessels, regenerated
annually, adapted for long-distance movement, and programmed to wait until
conditions are favorable for growth. In theory, seeds allow for maximum
genetic capture using minimal space and resources in comparison to plants,
but seeds of each species behave differently, and no seed lasts forever.
This presentation will focus on the US National Arboretum’s efforts to
facilitate seed-based plant conservation efforts, covering the challenges
faced in the process and the collaborative efforts of the National Plant
Germplasm System to meet the needs of conservation practitioners and
stakeholders.
