Sometimes called the ?Lungs of DC,? the tree canopy in Rock Creek Park cools, protects, and shelters people and wildlife. Recently, the National Park Service (NPS) published an Environmental Assessment on a proposed rehabilitation of the Rock Creek Golf Course. At this stage, *the plan calls for the removal of over 1,200 trees ? amounting to the loss of approximately 8 acres in tree canopy*. https://caseytrees.org/2023/10/calling-all-casey-trees-advocates-save-trees-in-rock-creek-park/ According to the WUSA story: To restore the course to its former glory, NPS is proposing the removal of 1,200 trees. Of those, more than 366 were determined to be in poor health or already dead and nearly 190 are non-native, invasive species that pose a threat to native plant species. Approximately 300 other trees would be removed to promote forest health. To mitigate for these tree removals, up to 200 trees of native species would be planted in the course. Also, more than eight acres of meadows would be rehabilitated throughout the golf course and an additional 4.5 acres would be planted in the northern section of the course. https://www.wusa9.com/article/tech/science/environment/national-park-service-rock-creek-park-golf-course-tree-removal/65-7e176b66-890e-48b8-a18b-b9b8dfab43de https://dcist.com/story/23/10/24/dc-golf-course-project-cuts-trees-rock-creek-park -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If all goes well, it will be in the WG-33 Conference Room (West Wing, ground floor) at the museum. This is the room where we had been meeting prior to the beginning of the pandemic. The cost will be $10 per person which will cover beverages, lasagna (Pines of Rome) and bread (Bon au Pain). A Google Doc for signing up will be available at a later date. And it is hoped that the meeting will be hybrid, with the presidential address available on Zoom as well as in-person. ? ?? ? ?? ??? ?
